Claude's Startup Program: Free Credits, Priority Limits, and How to Get In

If you're building an AI product, API costs can eat your runway before you find product-market fit. Anthropic's Claude Startups program is designed to soften that.

What you get
Founders can apply for free credits and priority rate limits, and acceptance moves you to Anthropic's highest rate limits, so you can ship to production without throttling while on credits. The program also includes invitations to startup-focused events, including workshops, webinars, and networking. (Claude for Startups +2)

The program reportedly expanded on October 6, 2026. According to one report, approved companies now get a free year of Claude Team (up to five Premium seats), $1,000 in API credits and partner discounts worth up to $45,000. The same report notes the credits expire in six months and work only on Anthropic's API. (pasqualepillitteri) (pasqualepillitteri)

Who qualifies
Per Anthropic's program page, your company must have received equity funding from an institutional investor, been founded within the last four years, and not previously received Anthropic startup credits. You also need a Claude Console account (the API console, not the Claude app) and a company email address. (claude) (claude)

Earlier versions of the program required backing from a partner VC. The current page says it is open to any early-stage founder or startup, with or without VC backing. So if you were turned away before, check again. (claude)

What happens when credits run out
You move to standard API pricing, and the program is built for commercial products, so you can ship to paying customers from day one. (claude)

Is it worth applying?
Yes, if Claude is in your stack. It costs nothing, and the rate limits matter as much as the credits, because throttling at launch is painful. The upside is also lower switching costs: the longer you build on Claude, the more your prompts, evals, and workflows are tuned to it. That's good for Anthropic, but it's also real value if Claude is the right model for your product.

A caution on the numbers
Sources disagree on credit amounts. One guide lists tiers of $5,000 direct and $25,000 with a VC referral, and says Anthropic may award up to $100,000 at its discretion. Another reports $1,000. Program terms change often, so treat third-party figures as estimates. Check the current terms at claude.com/programs/startups before you plan around any number.

Quick start: Create a Console account with your company email, confirm your funding and founding date meet the criteria, then apply on the program page.
